The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors narrowly approved an Outdoor Lighting Ordinance aimed at reducing light pollution in unincorporated areas, passing the measure with a 3-2 vote. This new ordinance incorporates guidelines based on the International Dark-Sky Association’s principles, emphasizing warm-colored, downward-facing lights to mitigate “light trespass” onto neighboring properties. Associate Planner Reanne Meighan stated the intention is to minimize unnecessary lighting while preserving residential quality of life. Public comments during the meeting reflected strong community support, with residents citing issues caused by excessively bright lights. The ordinance will be enforced primarily through complaints, although concerns were raised about potential enforcement challenges. Additionally, discussions ensued regarding the regulation of athletic field lighting and a proposed amendment for stricter standards in street lighting.
