Breckenridge, CO, Achieves Milestone as the First Ski Town Globally to Attain Dark Sky Certification

In August 2025, Breckenridge, Colorado, achieved certification as an International Dark Sky Community from DarkSky International, becoming the first ski resort globally to earn this designation. This recognition highlights the town’s commitment to reducing light pollution and fostering appreciation for its natural night sky. Breckenridge has been working on light pollution mitigation since 2007 and actively pursued the certification starting in 2023. The new standards for outdoor lighting, effective in 2024, are expected to enhance the community’s environmental sustainability while promoting stargazing and responsible tourism. Mayor Kelly Owens emphasized that this achievement not only celebrates the town’s environmental efforts but also supports the protection of nocturnal wildlife and ecosystem integrity, ensuring the region’s natural beauty for generations to come.
