Brigham City has implemented new lighting standards aimed at preserving the dark skies essential for the migration of millions of birds, particularly around the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Advocates, including Dean Lester from the Friends of the Bear River Refuge, argue that minimizing artificial light is crucial for protecting both wildlife and the area’s natural beauty amid rapid urban growth. The regulations require all new outdoor lighting to be fully shielded, directing light downward and requiring detailed lighting plans for larger developments. City planner Mark Bradley stressed the importance of balancing necessary development with environmental preservation, aiming to ensure that residents can still connect with the night sky.
