Canon Inc. has unveiled a groundbreaking 2/3″ SPAD sensor, boasting approximately 2.1 megapixels and a high dynamic range of 156dB, which allows for exceptional image clarity in both low-light conditions and environments with extreme lighting contrasts. Utilizing innovative “weighted photon counting” technology, the sensor efficiently estimates photon levels without overwhelming power consumption, mitigating issues like flickering from LED lights and avoiding image white-out during high illumination. This new sensor is anticipated to have diverse applications, particularly in autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance systems, with Canon planning to advance its development toward mass production. The announcement was made on June 12, 2025, at the 2025 Symposium on VLSI Technology and Circuits in Kyoto, Japan.
