Champaign Pickleball Complex Lighting Initiative Earns Sustainability Certification

The Centennial Park pickleball Complex in Champaign, Illinois, has achieved the prestigious DarkSky Approved certification for its new sustainable lighting system, designed by Musco Lighting. Announced by DarkSky International, this upgrade minimizes light pollution while enhancing playability for local pickleball enthusiasts, who can now enjoy the sport after sunset. Sarah Sandquist, Executive Director of the Champaign Park District, noted the immediate positive response from players, with the facility experiencing high demand for its courts. This project, completed in February 2025, marks the complex as the second of its kind in Illinois to receive this certification and is part of a multi-year plan to further develop the site, including adding more courts and amenities.
