City officials are taking steps to address concerns regarding the bright lighting at the end of Marine Peace Park’s wharf, which has been deemed intrusive for nesting birds in the nearby sanctuary. Following a recommendation from the Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC), council members discussed the potential installation of motion detection sensors to reduce light pollution while still ensuring security for the gas dock. EAC member Sylvia Lindgren emphasized the impact of excessive lighting on wildlife and proposed exploring cost-effective solutions, including lower wattage bulbs. While most council members supported the amended motion to gather more information, Councillor Kevin Flynn expressed hesitation regarding the tight timeline for implementation, suggesting it could compromise other city priorities. The aim is to finalize plans by March 2025, ahead of the spring nesting season, to mitigate the lighting’s effects on bird behavior.
