Coventry is set to revive its tram network almost 85 years after the last service ran, with the introduction of a new Very Light Rail (VLR) system that promises to be more affordable and environmentally friendly. Developed in collaboration with Coventry City Council and local institutions, the VLR technology uses battery-powered trams that can navigate tight corners and require less infrastructure than traditional systems, reducing installation costs and time. A 220-meter demonstrator track is currently under construction, with plans to link key city destinations by 2027. However, the project faces scrutiny regarding its cost-effectiveness, and funding may hinge on the success of initial trials. This innovative approach to urban transit could set a precedent for other towns and cities looking to enhance public transport.
