The City of Salmon Arm is seeing significant benefits from its ongoing transition to LED lighting, with over 2,000 fixtures now illuminating roads and public spaces. The switch from conventional high-pressure sodium lamps to energy-efficient LEDs has not only improved the lifespan of streetlights—from an operational life of 20,000 hours to approximately 100,000 hours—but also led to substantial cost savings. According to city capital works supervisor Colin Day, the city saves about $30 per fixture annually, totaling around $57,000 across the city’s lighting system each year. Additionally, the new fixtures minimize light pollution and enhance environmental compliance by directing light downward. The city has also introduced advanced dimming and motion sensor technology along pathways, allowing for customizable lighting adjustments to ensure safety while reducing environmental impact. Overall, the LED conversion is projected to save nearly $200,000 over the fixtures’ lifespan, benefiting both the city’s budget and the environment.
