Group4 Labs, a company based in Fremont, California, has partnered with researchers from Alfred University to develop a sacrificial substrate that will enhance its GaN-on-Diamond technology, thereby improving efficiency in solid-state lighting and advancing sensing and communication technologies. The project, overseen by Inamori Professors S.K. Sundaram and Scott Misture, aims to create a substrate material that effectively combines diamond and semiconductor properties for efficient heat management. They have identified cordierite glass-ceramics as a promising candidate for the diamond coating substrate, due to their compatibility in thermal expansion and chemical stability. Sundaram and Misture are addressing previous challenges associated with thermal mismatches by optimizing the glass chemistry to ensure a successful integration of the materials.
