Comet Sighting Highlights Dark Sky Initiatives in Durango

The article discusses Durango’s dark sky ordinance, established in 2005, which regulates outdoor lighting to minimize light pollution. City spokesman Tom Sluis noted that the stadium lights were installed before the ordinance and are not entirely shielded, causing issues for local astronomy enthusiasts. Meanwhile, the city is moving towards updating its lighting regulations as part of an effort to be certified as an “International Dark Sky Community.” The upcoming City Council meeting will address these standards, aiming to improve compliance and enhance the nighttime environment for both residents and wildlife.
