Dan Oakley, chair of the committee advising DarkSky International, praised Ampleforth Abbey and its surrounding area for joining the North York Moors National Park’s Dark Skies Friendly Community scheme, which focuses on reducing light pollution. This initiative encourages local neighborhoods to collaborate in preserving the night sky by conducting thorough lighting audits and retrofitting outdoor lighting to minimize glare and optimize visibility. Ampleforth Abbey has successfully upgraded over 100 outdoor lights, providing a safer environment for its community while benefiting local wildlife. These efforts align with the ongoing 10th Dark Skies Festival, aimed at raising awareness of light pollution and promoting responsible lighting practices.
