Residents are invited to provide input on a draft plan proposing the establishment of a dark sky reserve spanning nearly 900 square kilometers in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. This initiative aims to reduce light pollution, enhance the visibility of the night sky, and protect nocturnal wildlife. If approved by the Sunshine Coast Council and the community, the plan will serve as a basis for an application to Dark Sky International. The proposed reserve encompasses areas including the Mary River catchment and nearby townships such as Maleny and Montville. An initial survey indicated that over 95% of respondents support safeguarding dark skies for future generations. Local officials stress the importance of community involvement in successfully achieving this designation while managing outdoor lighting responsibly. Feedback on the Draft Lighting Management Plan is open until July 11.
