The Nachtlichter app, developed through the Nachtlicht-BüHNE project, engages citizen scientists to document night light sources in Germany, combining academic insights with public participation. Observers use the app to survey illuminated areas along predetermined transects, classifying 18 different types of light while reporting characteristics such as size and direction. Data collected from the main experiment between August and November 2021 shows that Nachtlichter records significantly more streetlights compared to existing databases, highlighting its comprehensive nature. Subsequent campaigns aimed to adjust for lights that often turn off and explore lighting changes post a new German law. The methodology involves validation against public records, accounting for variables like observation time and satellite data for estimating overall light levels. The study emphasizes the relationship between light types and satellite radiance, providing valuable insights into urban lighting dynamics.
