Residents in the Sunshine Coast hinterland have expressed strong support for a proposed Dark Sky Reserve aimed at preserving the region’s night skies. During a recent consultation period, over 95% of the 1,200 survey respondents backed the initiative, which encompasses an 873 square kilometer area, including the Kirbys Road Environment Reserve and surrounding townships. Advocates believe the reserve could enhance community well-being, protect wildlife, promote astrotourism, and foster responsible lighting practices. While some locals near the reserve have raised concerns about increased visitor traffic, Councillors emphasize a commitment to managing the reserve effectively. The Council plans to continue discussions with the community and stakeholders to prepare necessary technical documentation before seeking formal designation from Dark Sky International. This initiative not only highlights the region’s unique natural beauty but also promotes awareness of light pollution and its environmental impacts.
