Community Voices Concerns on Dark Sky Outdoor Lighting Regulation

Liberty Hill’s recent city council meeting on September 25 saw an influx of community members voicing their opinions on proposed amendments to the Dark Sky Outdoor Lighting Ordinance. Fourteen residents addressed the council, with 10 in favor of the amendments designed to enhance the Dark Sky Initiative, while four local business owners expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on their operations, particularly regarding the reduction of nighttime signage. The city has been working towards a Dark Sky designation since 2020, with an established ordinance that prioritizes responsible outdoor lighting. Proponents argue that stricter lighting regulations will benefit both the community and local businesses by fostering an eco-friendly environment and potentially boosting astro-tourism. Despite differing views, stakeholders showed a willingness to collaborate for a mutually agreeable solution, with the council planning further discussions before a vote in December.
