Whittlesey Town Council has unanimously decided to address concerns to Cambridgeshire County Council about a significant decrease in pedestrian lighting following the installation of new street lamps. During a meeting, council members, led by Cllr Barry Wainwright, expressed their worries about many town roads remaining in “darkness.” Cllr Wainwright criticized the county council for prioritizing cost savings over public safety, noting that the new 3-watt bulbs provide significantly less illumination than the previous 20-watt lights, with most light directed onto roadways rather than pavements. Other council members, including Cllrs Dee Laws and Chris Boden, shared personal experiences of feeling unsafe and encountering trip hazards due to insufficient lighting, prompting the unanimous decision to formally raise these issues with the county council.
