Council Approves Compromise on DarkSky Regulation

The Alamosa City Council has approved a compromise ordinance aimed at advancing the city’s participation in the Sangre de Cristo Dark Sky Reserve initiative, following extensive public debate both in support and opposition. The ordinance, titled “Ordinance No. 27-2024,” modifies the Unified Development Code regarding outdoor lighting, primarily impacting new constructions or significant renovations. Key provisions include requirements for downward-facing light fixtures, reduced brightness levels, warmer light temperatures, and recommendations for using lighting only when necessary. While the changes may not fully align with the more stringent standards set by DarkSky International, city officials view this as a significant first step toward preserving dark skies in the region and improving the city’s lighting practices.
