Donegal County Council is set to transition to new energy-efficient LED lights in its public lighting network due to concerns over the impact of blue-rich lighting on biodiversity. Although the Council has successfully reduced electricity costs and carbon emissions by upgrading to LEDs, research indicates that cool-white LEDs can disrupt the biological rhythms of organisms, affecting their health and ecosystems. To mitigate these effects, the Council plans to introduce 2,200 Kelvin LEDs in 2025, which will provide warmer illumination while maintaining energy savings. This shift is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to its Climate Action Plan, as detailed in its recently released progress report.
