Coventry City Council has announced that street lights will be turned back on overnight starting September 9, following complaints about safety after the lights were previously switched off during cost-saving measures. Initially implemented in July 2024 to save over £700,000, the decision to turn the lights back on comes after the council identified additional energy savings and received significant feedback from residents concerned about safety, especially for vulnerable individuals. Council leader George Duggins emphasized that transitioning to LED lighting will allow for sustained savings and equitable lighting across the city, stating that the previous selective switch-off was “unfair.” The council’s LED program is set to begin in November and conclude by August 2027.
