Cree has secured a matching $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of a competitive funding initiative totaling $10.1 million for five companies aimed at enhancing the research and development of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting products. The two-year project seeks significant cost reductions while maintaining quality through improved manufacturing processes and monitoring techniques. Greg Merritt, Cree’s vice president of marketing, emphasized the long-standing partnership with the DOE in advancing LED technology. The funding will support ongoing R&D efforts at Cree and its subsidiary, Ruud Lighting, with the potential for new jobs depending on their ability to meet the grant’s targets for efficiency and cost-effectiveness in LED production.
