A recent study led by Hong Kong Shue Yan University and the University of South Australia highlights the growing global demand for environmentally sustainable bed and breakfast (B&B) accommodations, emphasizing the importance of considering cultural differences in marketing these facilities. Analyzing responses from 800 participants across 37 countries, the research found varying preferences for green features based on cultural backgrounds, age, and education levels. Tourists from high-power distance cultures, such as China and India, were particularly supportive of sustainable practices, while Western travelers showed a preference for features like rooftop gardens but did not prioritize them in choosing accommodations. The study suggests that B&B operators tailoring their sustainability initiatives to align with cultural values can better meet the diverse needs of their guests, and it calls on governments to support the growth of eco-friendly B&Bs through incentives and infrastructure investments.
