The Decatur City Council is set to vote on a proposal to upgrade the high mast lighting at the I-65 and I-565 interchange to energy-efficient LED fixtures, which are already in use by the City of Huntsville. The proposal includes two options from Decatur Utilities: relamping the existing 400-watt high-pressure sodium lights for approximately $72,000 or replacing them with modern LED fixtures at a cost of $220,000. Despite the higher initial cost, utility officials advocate for the LED upgrade, which would replace 190 lights and result in an estimated annual savings of 98,000 kilowatt-hours, along with a $10,000 energy-efficiency rebate from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Challenges include a jammed lighting pole in Zone B, with plans to seek assistance from Huntsville Utilities if necessary. The existing lights, installed by ALDOT in the early 1990s, have seen little improvement since 2013, and the upgrade aims to align Decatur with recent enhancements made by Huntsville. The council meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
