Crocus Labs, a Berlin-based company, has unveiled an innovative lighting control system designed to transform existing multichannel LED setups into adaptive lighting platforms. Currently being tested at the James Hutton Institute’s research greenhouses, the system uses real-time spectral adjustments based on environmental data to optimize growth for crops like lettuce, basil, blueberries, and strawberries. CEO Dr. Prashanth Makaram emphasizes the system’s modularity, allowing it to integrate with a variety of existing hardware, thus providing a cost-effective upgrade without significant infrastructure changes. Future enhancements will incorporate plant-specific sensors and AI, enabling autonomous adjustments to light spectra, which promise improved energy efficiency and crop yield. With growing demand from vertical farms and greenhouse operators, Crocus Labs is seeking pilot projects and strategic partnerships to advance its energy-efficient agricultural solutions.
