Steve Conard, a seasoned astronomer and former engineer at Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Lab, relocated to Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, in May 2022, drawn by the area’s dark skies ideal for stargazing, particularly at Cherry Springs State Park. Conard has since become an active member of the community, promoting astronomy through presentations, columns for the Wellsboro Gazette, and by co-founding the Pennsylvania Wilds Astronomy Club. His illustrious career includes significant contributions to NASA missions like New Horizons, which made the first flyby of Pluto, and extensive involvement in asteroid studies. Conard and his wife, Cindy, who shares his passion for astronomy, continue to inspire through public outreach and efforts to combat light pollution, ensuring that both local residents and visitors can enjoy the beauty of the night sky in their newfound home.
