Stephanie Hull, representing Explore Lincoln City, emphasized the importance of dark skies for tourism and the community’s support for pursuing International Dark Skies Certification. Nilson advocated for reducing urban lighting by implementing motion-activated switches and limiting brightness to enhance safety and environmental health. Despite the lack of cited studies to support her claims, she linked decreased lighting to reduced crime opportunities and criticized current lighting practices. Mayor Susan Wahlke expressed support for voluntary efforts to lower lighting impacts, particularly from local businesses near the beach. The event has sparked a debate on the balance between safety, aesthetics, and ecological considerations in Lincoln City.
