Conservation photographer Anthony Sleiman recently captured images of the night sky over the Florida Everglades, revealing the glow from the new immigrant detention facility dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” located over 15 miles away. This industrial lighting threatens the ecological balance of Big Cypress National Preserve, recognized as the nation’s first “dark sky” preserve in 2016. Environmental advocates, including DarkSky International, argue that the facility’s lights disrupt nocturnal wildlife and compromise the preserve’s natural darkness, which is vital for many species. Critics are pushing back against the detention center, claiming it violates environmental laws and endangers local wildlife, such as the rare Florida bonneted bat and Florida panther. As legal challenges arise, the facility’s impact on the preserve’s status as a sanctuary for dark skies remains a significant concern.
