Campaigners are raising alarms over the impact of brighter LED headlights on road safety, despite reassurances from the Department for Transport. Lilian Greenwood, a Labour MP, sought clarification on whether advancements in headlight technology are linked to increased road accidents, only to be informed that there is no clear evidence of such a trend. However, Edmund King, President of the AA, reported that many drivers feel “blinded” by intense LED glare from oncoming vehicles. Research indicates that dazzling headlights were a factor in 216 accidents this year, with a minor increase from the previous year but a decrease from earlier highs. MP Graeme Downie expressed concerns about driver negligence regarding the effects of their vehicle’s lighting on others. While there is recognition that brighter lights can enhance visibility for drivers, the government has commissioned further independent research to investigate the root causes of headlamp glare, with results expected in 2025.
