Malta is experiencing a significant increase in light pollution, with traditional yellow streetlights being replaced by glaring white LEDs and bright electronic billboards populating roadways. This shift towards a brighter nighttime environment raises concerns about environmental and health impacts. A 2020 study led by Dr. Joseph Caruana found that much of Malta is heavily affected by light pollution, which disrupts local wildlife, particularly sensitive seabird species, and is linked to adverse health effects in humans, including sleep disturbances and increased depression severity. Advocates argue that the Maltese government needs to establish policy measures to mitigate light pollution while balancing the need for modern lighting solutions, such as regulating the brightness of electronic billboards and encouraging warmer, less intense lighting in residential areas. By implementing these changes, Malta could enhance both its natural environment and residents’ quality of life.
