On May 27, 2025, McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, Texas, hosted a lively star party, drawing locals and visitors eager to witness the area’s magnificent night sky, renowned for its exceptional darkness. Attendees, including families and stargazers from afar, enjoyed various celestial views through high-powered telescopes, despite a nearby thunderstorm. The region’s skies remain among the darkest in the world, thanks to successful conservation efforts, including lighting ordinances and dark-sky-friendly practices recently adopted by local oil and gas operators. Designated as the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, this 15,000-square-mile area not only preserves the night sky but also serves as an economic and ecological asset, allowing communities to cherish and explore the cosmos.
