Eight city corporations in Bangladesh are set to replace fluorescent and sodium street lights with energy-saving LED lights, as reported by The Daily Star. This initiative aims to save approximately 10 megawatts (MW) of electricity daily, equivalent to powering an additional 5,000 households. The project will address street lighting across 200 kilometers of roads in cities including Dhaka, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong, with 20 kilometers powered by solar panels. Funded by the Asian Development Bank, the installation of 120, 90, and 60 watt lights is expected to take about two months, beginning in the 2014-15 fiscal year. Dhaka South City Corporation has already experienced benefits from LED lights, but further plans are currently stalled due to funding issues.
