Energy Sector Partners with Carlsbad Caverns National Park to Promote Night Sky Conservation

On January 8, 2025, the Dark for the Park Alliance announced new standards aimed at reducing light pollution in New Mexico’s oil and gas sector, particularly benefiting Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Collaborating with energy companies, including Franklin Mountain Energy, the initiative emphasizes safety while implementing measures such as light shielding and specialized bulbs to significantly decrease nighttime brightness. As a result of these upgrades, light pollution was reduced by an impressive 99% at distances up to 25 miles. Established in 2023, the alliance focuses on restoring quality night skies, which not only enhances workplace safety but also supports local communities, natural ecosystems, and night sky research.
