Enhanced Lighting Planned for Pathway Connecting Lakeland and Byron in York

City of York Council planning officers have recommended the approval of enhanced LED lighting for the snickelway emerging from between 9 and 11 High Ousegate, following concerns about inadequate illumination from lighting installed in September 2024. An environmental audit conducted by York BID and North Yorkshire Police highlighted the need for improved lighting to enhance safety and aesthetics along the route. The proposal involves extending existing festoon lighting to the junction with High Ousegate while ensuring that the design aligns with the historic context of the area, featuring grade II listed buildings from 1705. The planning officers emphasized that the decorative lighting aims to reduce light pollution while improving public safety.
