The University of Toronto is enhancing its plant research capabilities with a significant lighting retrofit as part of its Project Leap initiative, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% by 2027. This upgrade replaces outdated fluorescent and incandescent lighting in its research facilities with energy-efficient LEDs, which consume up to 80% less energy and offer better spectral quality for plant growth. The new lighting supports diverse research areas, from studying photosynthesis in desert plants to tracking monarch butterfly migrations. By improving experimental conditions, the renovation not only helps meet sustainability goals but also opens new avenues for innovative research, positioning U of T at the forefront of environmental science while aligning campus infrastructure with climate-conscious practices.
