A new green LED technology developed by the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute’s Fengshan Tropical Horticultural Experiment Branch has proven effective in combating beet armyworm infestations, reducing their numbers by 40% and increasing spring onion production by up to 20%. The pests have significantly impacted spring onion farming in Yilan County, where climate anomalies have worsened their proliferation. Director Lee Wen-li noted the challenges posed by traditional pesticides, which fail against larvae hidden in the plant leaves. Local grower Lin Tung-hai reported a severe decline in planting areas due to the infestation, with spring onion cultivation halving from 400 to 150 hectares in Sansing Township.
