Enhancing the Growth Potential of Everbearing Strawberries in Subtropical Regions

In response to the growing demand for strawberries in tropical and subtropical regions, researchers have explored innovative cultivation techniques to overcome the challenges posed by high temperatures. A study conducted in a controlled environment greenhouse from August to December 2023 tested the effect of nighttime supplemental LED lighting on three everbearing strawberry cultivars: ‘Koi-ichigo’, ‘KS33’, and ‘KS38’. Results showed that LED lighting extended the day length and stabilized flower bud differentiation, enhancing growth and yield. While LED-treated plants had increased shoot dry weight and fruit quantity, fruit weight and sugar content remained on par with control groups. These findings indicate that nighttime LED lighting is an effective strategy for improving strawberry production in warmer climates.
