A new pop-up holiday light event, “Night of Lights,” will debut at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket this season, having received permission from the Town despite some bylaw conflicts. The event, organized by Ell’Events Inc., promises an immersive walk-through experience featuring over 1.5 million LED lights synchronized to festive music, along with food trucks and vendors. Although initial concerns regarding noise and the classification of the event as a carnival posed challenges, the town council has approved its progression after negotiations with the organizers. Mayor John Taylor expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made to minimize disruptions, while organizers hope the event will boost local tourism and community engagement, as well as support Epilepsy Toronto. With a capacity of up to 90,000 visitors, the event is expected to run for a week during the holidays, offering complimentary tickets to local students and families.
