Exploring the First-Ever Dark Sky County

In a century marked by rampant light pollution, the ability to see the night sky has dramatically diminished, with 80% of the U.S. population now unable to view the Milky Way. While just 100 years ago, people in rural areas could see thousands of stars, modern urban environments compromise this celestial experience, contributing to health issues and negatively impacting wildlife navigation and behavior. Recognizing this challenge, Teton County, Wyoming, became the world’s first designated Dark Sky county in April 2025, committing to strategies that reduce artificial light through intentional lighting design. This initiative aims not only to restore the night sky but also to support ecological balance, as disturbances in natural light greatly affect various species. With advocacy from organizations like DarkSky International, there remains hope for reclaiming our view of the cosmos.
