Fact Check: Is Texas Home to the World’s Largest Certified Dark Sky Reserve?

El Paso Matters is collaborating with Gigafact to produce “fact briefs” about pertinent community issues. One key topic highlighted is the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, which spans over 9 million acres across West Texas and parts of Coahuila, Mexico. Awarded its status in 2022 by Dark Sky International, the reserve aims to combat light pollution and protect night skies and wildlife habitats through regulated outdoor lighting. It is notable for being the only dark sky reserve that crosses an international border, joining a global network of over 255 similar reserves, including New Zealand’s Aoraki Mackenzie Reserve, the second-largest at 1.08 million acres.
