Fifteen academics and NGOs have urged Maltese authorities to implement nighttime blackouts in Dwejra, a protected Dark Sky Heritage Area on Gozo’s west coast, due to escalating light pollution that undermines its ecological integrity and educational value. In a letter addressed to Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, the organizations highlighted that recent artificial lighting from nearby boathouses and kiosks is compromising the area’s dark sky, which has been safeguarded for nearly 20 years under the Gozo and Comino Local Plan. The NGOs, including the Astronomical Society of Malta and Birdlife Malta, emphasized the necessity of reverting to previous regulations that required lights to be turned off at sundown to preserve the unique stargazing opportunities and protect sensitive wildlife. They called on the ministers to promptly address the situation, citing the growing impact of light pollution and the need for conservation efforts to benefit future generations.
