Bath & North East Somerset Council has made history as the first local authority in the UK to fully convert its main road lights to LED technology. This initiative is projected to slash energy consumption by over 1.5 kilowatt hours (kWh), saving the council approximately £200,000 annually in electricity costs and reducing carbon emissions by more than 780 tons. The installation of intelligent lighting lanterns will optimize energy usage based on traffic conditions, while LED lighting at zebra crossings is expected to contribute an additional reduction of 77,000 kWh per year. Councillor Caroline Roberts praised the project, highlighting its financial and environmental benefits, and noted the strong partnership with Philips, a key collaborator. The initiative has also earned recognition, winning the public lighting category at the Local Government News Street Design Awards 2013, set to take place in July.
