The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is set to receive approximately $1 million from a substantial $9.8 million grant awarded by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. This funding aims to develop innovative automation technologies to address significant labor challenges in the nursery industry, particularly for container nurseries grappling with high labor costs. Over the next five years, the project will explore a range of solutions, including automated potting machines and sprayers, while evaluating their economic viability and encouraging adoption through national outreach efforts. Led by experts in the field, the initiative will also investigate nursery owners’ perceptions and barriers to implementing automation, emphasizing tailored strategies that consider the unique needs of individual nurseries.
