Government Official Aims to Address Road Safety Issues Linked to Bright LED Headlights

Labour MP Lilian Greenwood highlighted the Department for Transport’s assessment of LED headlights, noting no significant trends linking improved lighting technology to increased vehicle collisions. However, concerns persist among the AA, with President Edmund King citing that many drivers feel “blinded” by these brighter lights, particularly from SUVs. National data reveals dazzling headlights contributed to 216 road incidents in 2023, reflecting a slight rise from the previous year but a decrease from past decades. MP Graeme Downie warned that modern lighting may hinder drivers’ awareness of its impact on others, while RAC policy officer Rod Dennis emphasized the pressing need for clarity on this issue. The government is set to publish independent research on headlight glare by summer 2025 to explore these concerns further.
