Grand Lake is on track to become a certified International Dark Sky community, with plans to submit its final application to DarkSky International by summer’s end. Spearheaded by community engagement manager Katie Hearsum, the town has been collecting essential light meter readings and fulfilling criteria, including adopting a new lighting policy aimed at reducing light pollution. The ordinance mandates that outdoor lighting must be shielded and directed downwards, while nonconforming lights are expected to comply within ten years. The town’s efforts, supported by the Colorado Tourism office‘s mentorship program, aim to enhance community benefits and tourism. If certified, Grand Lake will join the ranks of nine other Dark Sky communities in Colorado.
