Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve has been ranked 8th out of 76 national parks for visibility, despite recent wildfire challenges causing smoke in the Valley. A rigorous analysis of air quality data reveals that the park’s dedicated monitoring system, utilizing sensors to sample air particles, plays a crucial role in assessing visibility. Recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, the area offers stunning night skies and has seen a positive economic impact, generating $37.9 million in 2023. However, visitor satisfaction is at stake, as a recent study indicates that nearly half of recent visitors would reduce their visits if light pollution affects the park’s dark skies. Maintaining clear visibility is essential not only for visitor experience but also for the park’s economic contribution to the region.
