Groveland Council Approves New Outdoor Lighting to Preserve Dark Sky Status

The city of Groveland is taking significant strides to preserve its dark night sky while also saving on costs. Following a recent approval, Groveland will retrofit 783 leased light fixtures to comply with its Dark Sky Lighting ordinance, aiming to save approximately $95,000 over the next decade through increased energy efficiency and targeted lighting. This initiative is part of Groveland’s efforts to maintain its status as Florida’s first International Dark Sky Community, a designation achieved in June 2023. City officials anticipate that Duke Energy will complete the retrofitting by early next year, and the move is expected to serve as a model for other communities facing development pressures while addressing light pollution and its associated impacts on health and security.
