Gulf Power has partnered with the City of Pensacola to launch a two-year test of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting in selected downtown areas, with support from the Electric Power Research Institute. The initiative aims to assess the energy savings and reduced maintenance costs of LED technology, which the Department of Energy has highlighted as offering substantial benefits over traditional lighting. Sandy Sims, Gulf Power’s Public Affairs manager, emphasized the durability and efficiency of LED lights, which consume 75% less energy and last up to five times longer. The installed fixtures also promote “Dark Sky Friendly” design to minimize light pollution. City Councilwoman Megan Pratt expressed optimism about the project, noting potential significant savings for the city’s $730,000 annual street light electricity budget.
