Non-life insurers in India reported a 6.3% year-on-year increase in gross direct premiums, reaching ₹22,126.72 crore in May 2025, primarily driven by robust growth in standalone health insurance. General insurers saw a 5.72% rise to ₹19,209.97 crore, led by significant gains from industry leader New India Assurance Company, which posted a 22.47% increase in premiums. While private players like ICICI Lombard and Bajaj Allianz also experienced growth, some insurers like HDFC Ergo and Oriental Insurance faced declines. Overall growth has been slower compared to the previous year due to changes in accounting formats. Standalone health insurers thrived, with notable increases from Star Health & Allied and Care Health Insurance. Including specialized insurers, the total premium for the non-life insurance sector rose to ₹22,257.4 crore.
