Hengdian Group Reflects on Half a Century of Expansion and Philanthropy

Hengdian Group, founded in 1975 by former farmer Xu Wenrong, celebrates its 50th anniversary as one of China’s largest family-owned enterprises, known for its significant contributions to the community and its diverse business portfolio, including film production at Hengdian World Studios. The company has invested heavily in public infrastructure, donating 7.4 billion yuan ($1 billion) to develop roads, schools, and hospitals, and contributing 500 million yuan ($69 million) to charity over the decades to support the local community. With a commitment to sustainability, Hengdian has also allocated 3 billion yuan ($500 million) to environmental projects in recent years. Under the leadership of Xu’s son, Xu Yong’an, the Group emphasizes reciprocity with society, which has led to economic growth in Hengdian town, where per capita income now surpasses the national average. As of 2024, Hengdian Group reported revenues nearing 100 billion yuan ($13.2 billion), underscoring its role as both a business leader and a force for good.
