A 2023 study indicates that light pollution doubles globally every eight years, with urban centers like Vancouver experiencing the most dramatic declines in stargazing opportunities. Experts warn that the shift from traditional lighting to blue-spectrum LED lights exacerbates this issue, not only diminishing our ability to see celestial wonders like the Milky Way, but also adversely affecting human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. Advocacy groups are calling for “smart lighting” solutions to curb light pollution, emphasizing the necessity of preserving our night skies for future generations. As the brightness of cities increases, future residents may only be left with the most luminous celestial bodies, making educational facilities like the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre even more crucial in providing glimpses of the unspoiled cosmos.
