International Dark Sky Week, taking place from April 21-28, celebrates the appreciation of natural darkness and aims to protect the world’s night skies. Spearheaded by DarkSky International, the event encourages people to engage with their surroundings and understand the implications of light pollution. Norwood, Colorado, recognized as the first International Dark Sky Community on the Western Slope, has a dedicated group, the Norwood Dark Sky Advocates (NDSA), working to maintain dark skies. Dr. Bob Grossman, president of the Western Slope Dark Sky Coalition, emphasizes the significance of darkness for both ecological and human health, highlighting the detrimental effects of light pollution. As more communities, including Nucla and Naturita, achieve Dark Sky Community designations, initiatives like responsible outdoor lighting become crucial for preserving the beauty and health benefits of the night sky.
